Benefits to Aeration
Aeration is an environmentally friendly technique to maintain and rejuvenate ponds. To eliminate chemical use and create a healthy eco-system, the simple and most economical method is to install an aeration system.
Aeration is the process of adding dissolved oxygen to water. It is important to maintain healthy levels of dissolved oxygen in your pond because the oxygen aids in the breakdown of decaying vegetation and other nutrients that find their way into your pond. This breakdown of the bottom silt is carried out by microorganisms where the water meets the soil and into the soil a few centimeters. The decomposition is carried out by both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Aerobic decomposition requires a continuous supply of oxygen and proceeds more rapidly as dissolved oxygen concentrations near saturation levels. The primary end results of aerobic bacteria decomposition is carbon dioxide. Anaerobic decomposition is slower than aerobic decomposition, and the end products are organic compounds such as alcohols and foul-smelling organic acids. One can conclude, based on these known facts, that the more decomposition we can facilitate through the additional of oxygen, the less nutrients there will be available for algae blooms and excess aquatic plant growth.
Mother Nature supplies, at times, sufficient amounts of dissolved oxygen through wind, rain, splashing water from a stream or waterfall, and by photosynthesis produced from aquatic plant life. However, as too many nutrients are added to the pond by runoff, grass clippings, and leaves from nearby trees for example, the demand for oxygen increases. Partner these additional nutrients with the warmth of summer, which allows for less dissolved oxygen, with the increased demand for oxygen, and ideal conditions are set for algae blooms, foul odors, fish kills and the build-up of stagnated vegetation.
The use of proper aeration or decorative aerating fountains can help Mother Nature keep up with the demand for dissolved oxygen and prolong the life of your pond. Aeration instills the oxygen necessary so normal biological processes in the pond system remain balanced. It also de-stratifies the water column and also moves the water in low circulation areas that are prone to algae blooms. Aeration provides a way to clean up stagnant ponds and improve the water column and create a healthy pond without using harmful chemicals.
Carolina AlgaeControl, LLC represents the Kasco line of aerators and decorative aerating fountains because they are a perfect fit for the smaller, shallower ponds that are prolific all around South Carolina. Kasco Aerators have one of the highest standard aeration efficiency ratings in the business, and work best in ponds that have depths of 12 feet or less. What this means to you is that you’ll get more work done for the dollars spent with a Kasco aerator or fountain. If you are building a new pond, or are rejuvenating an old pond, give us a call to find out which Kasco product is right for you.
